Information about Porting and Polishing?

I have a single cyl. Is it possible for me to safely and effectively port and polish the head? I would prefer not to take it to a performance shop for a valve job and resurface. Will there be value in me doing it my self? Can I do it with a dremel? Keep in mind it is only a thumper, so it shouldn't be too complex.
